Process

How Hillside handles deck & fence staining

Stain only lasts if the wood is ready for it. Old, peeling stain is scraped and sanded, the wood is cleaned so the new stain can soak in, and nearby siding, concrete, and plants are covered before staining. Hillside Painting picks the stain type for the job: a semi-transparent stain shows the grain, while a solid stain covers weathered wood and lasts longer between coats.

  1. Look at the wood

Check the boards for peeling, graying, and soft spots, and pick a stain type and color.

  2. Clean and prep

Scrape and sand loose stain, clean the wood, and cover siding, concrete, plants, and anything nearby.

  3. Stain

Apply the stain to boards, rails, posts, and edges for even color and full coverage.

  4. Final check

Remove the covers, look over every section in daylight, and clean up.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to stain a deck or fence in Utah?

Late spring through early fall, on dry days when it is not too hot or cold. The wood should be dry for a day or two before staining so the stain soaks in.

How often should a deck or fence be restained?

It depends on sun exposure and the stain. Decks in full sun usually need it more often than shaded fences, and solid stains generally last longer than semi-transparent ones.

Semi-transparent or solid stain?

Semi-transparent stain lets the wood grain show and suits newer, healthy wood. Solid stain hides weathered or mismatched boards and usually lasts longer.

Can you stain just part of a fence?

Yes. A single run of fence, a gate, or one damaged section is a welcome small job.

Do you also paint fences and decks?

Yes. Some fences and railings look better painted or with a solid color stain, and the estimate covers which fits your wood.

How is deck or fence staining priced?

It depends on the size of the deck or the length and height of the fence, the condition of the wood, how much sanding it needs, and the stain. Text photos to 385-354-6733 to get started.
